Beth Lundell Garver
Principal Investigator
Bethany Lundell Garver, AIA, NOMA, is Dean and Faculty of Practice at The Boston Architectural College. She leads college-wide efforts connecting education with practice through applied research and experiential learning. She leads the college's Gateway Office, a community-based design (un)center. Her work focuses on interior urbanism, community engagement, design pedagogy, and professional practice.
Beth holds a MAUD with distinction from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Interior Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture, both magna cum laude, from Auburn University. She has held national board leadership positions, most recently with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and the American Institute of Architecture Students.
Beth has 15 years of professional experience in interior architecture and urban design. Prior to moving to Boston, Beth worked with Rafael Viñoly Architects in New York and San Francisco managing laboratory and healthcare projects from design through completion, including several years full-time onsite during construction.
Leanne Go
Research Assistant
Leanne recently graduated from The Boston Architectural College with her Master of Architecture degree and is now a designer in the SmithGroup Boston office. During her time at the BAC, she was a three-time fellow in the Gateway Office. This experience introduced her to building material reuse which she further explored in her thesis Waste Not, Want Not. She joined the SCRAP Lab team the following semester.
Sarah Gruen
Research Assistant
Sarah is a current Master of Architecture student at The Boston Architectural College entering her final year. As a two-time Gateway Office Fellow, she’s connected with material reuse as a positive strategy for sustainability, economy, and community revitalization. Sarah was recently hired as a designer and assistant project manager by SHED Studio in Boston and enjoys working with causes local to the city.
Robert Merchel
Research Assistant
Robert is a Bachelor of Architecture student currently completing his degree project as he works toward graduation at the Boston Architectural College. His work is driven by a strong interest in sustainable design and incorporating material reuse, circular construction, and environmentally responsible design strategies into the architectural process.
Rashmi Ramaswamy
Principal Investigator
Rashmi Ramaswamy is an architect and co‐founder of SHED Studio, a mission‐driven architectural and sustainable design collaborative. She has a background in participatory design, arts‐based activism and civic engagement. She has designed and managed several affordable housing, urban agriculture and other projects for nonprofit clients, with a focus on community involvement, sustainability and materials-based design. Rashmi's work is based in Chicago and Boston.
Rashmi’s passion for reuse of salvaged materials led to her being a founding board member of the Rebuilding Exchange in Chicago, where she served as vice chair. In Boston, she currently serves on the board of Boston Building Resources. Rashmi is also co-founder of ModFarm, a think-tank focused on food access; Converge:Exchange; and Territory, a design-based youth development organization. Rashmi is adjunct faculty at The Boston Architectural College, and as Coordinator of the Gateway Office, she shares her dedication to reuse and community-based design with students.
Ashley Tannebaum
Principal Investigator
Ashley Tannebaum is Director of Collaborative Practice at The Boston Architectural College. At the BAC, she leads two core experiential learning courses (CityLab Intensive and Community Practice) that encourage students to develop their own practice with and in their communities.
Ashley earned her Doctor of Design degree from Harvard University where she served on the Healthy Places Design Lab research team investigating processes to support aging in place for older people, particularly considering climate change. Through Harvard's Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Ashley embraced innovative and evidence-based teaching strategies for active student engagement. Ashley holds a BA in Architecture and her Master of Architecture + Health at Clemson University.
From 2014 to 2021, Ashley worked with Jumper Carter Sease Architects designing and managing several civic spaces and learning environments. She continues to provide design services as a sole practitioner, informing her educational practice.
